The till number is not the licence

Nothing in Kenyan finance feels more official than an M-Pesa prompt. Fraud operations and offshore platforms know it — which is why the CMA's licensee list, not the payment screen, is where a deposit decision starts.

Facts checked on October 22, 2026

Kenya is one of the few emerging markets with a genuinely local answer: the CMA licenses online forex brokers and publishes the list. Some brands Kenyans use hold that licence through a Kenyan entity. Most advertised brands do not — they onboard Kenyans offshore, M-Pesa or not.

The local answer exists — use it

If a broker's Kenyan entity is on the CMA licensee list, your account sits under Kenyan law with a local dispute route. If the till number belongs to a payment agent for an offshore entity, your protection is the offshore answer: none. The checker prints which of those your pair is, for all 40 brands.

The viable floor in shillings

M-Pesa's near-zero friction hides conversion and spread the same way GCash does. About KSh26,000 is the floor where those costs stop being the story. And some brands in every Kenyan 'best broker' list — eToro among them — do not accept Kenyans at all: check acceptance before the review, always.

The trap

A local payment method is rented infrastructure. Any platform can integrate M-Pesa; only a CMA licensee is a Kenyan-regulated broker.

Before any deposit, run the whole check

The free check gives you the verdict for one country and one broker. The Deposit Safety Kit gives you the complete walkthroughs: how to verify the entity in the broker's own legal footer, where on your regulator's site the register and the warning lists live, how to read a compensation scheme, and the first-withdrawal test protocol — deposit small, withdraw first, then decide.
